A Field Trip to Saverne’s Fair Trade Shop
Two weeks ago, we went to the Fair Trade shop, which is 200 meters from our school. Mrs Kuntzler a benevolent woman, welcomed us and showed us the shop, which opened 7 years ago, and all the products sold there :
Food from Mexico, Guatemala and India
Clothes from India
Carpets woven in India
Mrs Kuntzler explained us the history of the Fair Trade shops : Fair Trade began after World War II. Max Havelaar a Dutch man launched this business. The first Fair Trade products sold in Dutch supermarkets were coffee, tea, chocolate, cocoa, and clothes.
The products come mainly from three continents : Asia, Latin America and
Africa. Fair trade helps farmers of poor countries to develop their activities and sell their products worldwide. Fair trade guarantees a better life for the farmers, also a good education for their children, as well as high quality products for consumers.
The Fair Trade store of Saverne sells musical instruments, games and food.
The musical instruments come from Africa, especially the rain stick ;
wooden games are from Asia.
We did some shopping there. The following week we had a brunch with Fair Trade products.
We drank a soft drink made with Guarana, it tasted like coca cola ; and an exotic juice made with passion fruit.
We ate dried mango, chocolate spread, and a spread made with speculos.
We tasted passion fruit jam.
We bought these products to compare with products sold in supermarkets, and to taste Fair Trade products.
All the products were good and tasty and we all had fun !
